What Is Delay Lama? (And Is It the Dalai Lama?)

Delay Lama is a free vocal synthesizer VST plugin released in 2002 by the Dutch developers AudioNerdz. The name is a pun on the Dalai Lama: it plays a chanting, animated monk, and it is not related to the Dalai Lama or to the Delay Llama guitar pedal. If you searched for either of those, this is a different thing.

  • Developer: AudioNerdz (Netherlands) – official download page
  • Format: VST2 instrument (32-bit). Official builds exist for Windows, Mac OS 9 and a Mac OS X beta.
  • Price: Free. AudioNerdz asks users to consider donating to savetibet.org.
  • Modern DAWs: Needs a 32-bit bridge in most 64-bit hosts – see the 64-bit setup guide.
  • This site: An independent fan archive. We do not host the plugin, and our web synth is an interpretation, not the original.

What Makes Delay Lama Different?

Most vocal synth plugins are all engine, no personality — sterile sliders, static envelopes, and cold spectrograms with nothing to actually look at. Delay Lama flips that on its head.

Conventional Vocal Synths

Cold Sliders & Static Envelopes

Traditional plugins isolate sound design behind endless sub-menus and numeric dials. While capable of formant filtering, they offer zero visual feedback on performance dynamics, making vocal synthesis feel clinical rather than expressive.

The Delay Lama Paradigm

Live Character Animation Synced to Performance

Delay Lama features a fully animated 3D Tibetan monk whose mouth, expression, and vocal tone shift in real time based on your playing. It is not just a novelty — under the hood is a genuinely capable monophonic vocal synthesis engine with high-resolution control over vowel shaping, ensuring the audio moves as expressively as the character does.

A Rare Union of Playful Character & Serious Acoustic Synthesis

By linking the 3D vertex mesh directly to MIDI pitchbend and vowel formant filter cutoff frequencies, AudioNerdz created a multisensory instrument. When you pitch-bend upward, the monk's eyebrows raise in tandem with vocal resonance; when you morph vowels, his lips physically open and round.

Key Features of Delay Lama

Engineered by AudioNerdz in 2002, Delay Lama combines advanced DSP vocal modeling with an unforgettable user interface.

How Delay Lama Works: Performance Modes & Formant Shaping

Playing Delay Lama is intuitive whether you are performing live at a MIDI keyboard or composing completely in-the-box with mouse automation.

Feed Delay Lama notes from your piano roll or MIDI keyboard, and it immediately sings back in a rich, monk-like acoustic timbre. Bend the pitch using your controller's pitch wheel, and the vowel morphs with it in real time. Or skip the keyboard altogether and drag across the XY-pad to sculpt pitch and vowel geometry simultaneously in a single expressive gesture.

Add in adjustable portamento for smooth, continuous glides between notes, and engage the onboard stereo delay for spatial depth, and you have an instrument that is as fun to perform with as it is captivating to hear.

Vowel Formant Acoustic Spectrum

How to Run Delay Lama in Modern 64-Bit DAWs

Because the original Delay Lama was compiled as a 32-bit VST 2.4 plugin, modern 64-bit digital audio workstations require bridging wrappers or modern emulators. Follow these step-by-step setup methods.

  • 1

Place DelayLama.dll in Your 32-Bit VST Directory

Download the original DelayLama.dll and copy it to your VST2 folder, typically C:\Program Files (x86)\VstPlugins\.

  • 2

Scan Plugins in FL Studio Plugin Manager

Open FL Studio → Options → Manage Plugins. Enable "Verify plugins" and click "Find installed plugins".

  • 3

    Automatic Native Bit-Bridging (ILBridge)

FL Studio automatically runs Delay Lama through its internal 32-bit wrapper (ILBridge). The 3D monk window will open seamlessly with complete MIDI and automation support.

  • 1

    Install jBridge Utility for Windows

Because Ableton Live 10+ dropped 32-bit VST support, install jBridge. Run jBridger.exe and select your 32-bit VST folder to convert DelayLama.dll into a 64-bit bridged plugin.

  • 2

Scan Bridged VST Folder in Ableton Live

In Ableton Live, go to Preferences → Plug-Ins. Enable "Use VST2 Plug-In Custom Folder" and point it to the output folder generated by jBridge.

  • 3

Map Mod Wheel (CC #1) to Vowel Formants

Group Delay Lama into an Instrument Rack and map your MIDI controller's Mod Wheel to Parameter 1 (Formant X) for dynamic live vocal morphing.

  • 1

    Zero-Config Native Bridging

Cockos REAPER features industry-leading built-in 32-bit bridging. Simply drop DelayLama.dll into your scanned plugin folder.

  • 2

    Run as Dedicated Process

In the FX browser, right-click Delay Lama → Run as → Dedicated process to isolate the 32-bit thread and guarantee total DAW stability.

  • 1

    macOS Modern Architecture Notice

The original Mac release was compiled for PowerPC / Carbon OS9/OSX. It cannot run natively on Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) or 64-bit macOS Catalina+ without emulation.
